The holidays are about being thankful for your family and friends…and the amazing food. Holiday gatherings, dinners, brunches and parties, are what we look forward to, but unfortunately, the extra cooking and additional people in your home create clogged drains.
Here are some tips on how to avoid a holiday plumbing disaster:
Whether you’re cooking a turkey, ham, or other dish that leaves grease in the bottom of the pan,, make sure to pour the grease into a disposable container and toss in the trash. Pouring grease down the drain will cause a clogged pipe to strike. The reason is, once grease cools, it hardens and coagulates, creating clogs in your pipe.
“I’ve Got a Flush”
What you flush down your toilet can also cause a clogged pipe. You should only flush toilet paper and human waste. Feminine hygiene products, paper towels, baby wipes, etc. can’t fully pass through your pipes. Also, don’t overstrain your toilet–if you have a low-flow toilet, be mindful of how much you’re trying to flush. If you have too much waste trying to go down at once, this can create a clog.
Don’t Mesh With Me
One of the biggest ways to prevent drain issues is having a mesh screen over any drain. Mesh screens prevent food particles from going down the kitchen sink. Also they help keep hair from clogging your bathtub and bathroom sinks.
Using bars of soap with hard water can create a residue in your drains, and this eventually can create a blockage. If you switch to liquid soap, your water will be singing as it flows smoothly through your pipes. Also, you can switch to liquid hand sanitizer, which doesn’t require you to use any water (this can help you save on your water bill too).
